Most people experience some type of foot pain during their lifetime6

The feet and lower body contain structures that are naturally shock absorbing, such as the foot arch and ankle joint. These structures help to cope with the pressure generated through walking and standing.3 However, walking on hard surfaces and being on the feet all day can disrupt the natural shock absorption by causing over-pronation: where the foot rolls excessively inwards, as well as fat pad migration away from the ball of foot and heel areas where it is needed.7,8 As a result, foot muscles work harder than usual and can become fatigued. Pain can impact the ball of the foot, arch or heel, and may also affect the ankle, knee and lower back.9–11

Tired, aching feet are common, particularly in people who are on their feet all day; a recent survey indicated that ~60% of people experience foot pain at the end of their work shift.12 The prevalence also increases as people age, due to weakening of the structures of the foot.13 Tired, aching feet can lower productivity and reduce enjoyment of leisure time.7,13,14 However, relatively few people seek treatment for their foot pain.15

~50–60% of working adults report experiencing sore feet at the end of the day, with 44% admitting it had a negative impact upon productivity.14,16
