Conferences and events of interest to the pharmacy sector

 

Pharmaceutical Society 2016 Symposia Series

The 2016 symposia series will be run in three locations in 2016: 

Sunday 15 May 2016 - Christchurch, Chateau on the Park

Sunday 29 May 2016 - Auckland, Waipuna Hotel and Conference Centre (includes AGM).

(The Wellington event was held 1 May.)

The keynote speaker is Alison Roberts, from the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia, who will talk about the Health Destination Pharmacy programme which she championed.

Other talks include a refresher course on basic pharmacology, how pharmacists can help treat eye problems and how pharmacists can assist in palliative care.

Each event will have an expert panel discussing the Government's priority of a "one team" approach to health, plus the presentation of society awards.

New Zealand Society for the Study of Diabetes - Pharmacy study day and annual scientific meeting

The New Zealand society for the Study of Diabetes (NZSSD) committee is very keen to integrate pharmacy/ pharmacists into the management of diabetes. This year a diabetes pharmacy study day will be held prior to the main programme - the study days are targeted at a multidisciplinary audience, with specific workshops in the middle of the programme for specialities. The pharmacy stream includes a review of new medicines in diabetes management, case studies on pharmacist integration into primary and secondary care diabetes management, and a discussion on integrating pharmacists into the management of diabetes.  

The ASM includes everything from education sessions on diabetes self-management to a fun run/walk.

The Young and the Restless: the NZHPA's Medicines Information & Clinical Pharmacy SIG seminar

7-8 May, Auckland 

The Medicines Information & Clinical Pharmacy Special Interest Group (SIG) of the New Zealand Hospital Pharmacists' Association (NZHPA) holds this educational seminar each year.

In 2016 the theme is "The Young and the Restless" covering paediatrics, geriatrics and palliative care. Practical examples will be covered in a series of interactive workshops.

NZHPA Mental Health SIG seminar

9-10 July

Wellington Hospital

The New Zealand Hospital Pharmacists' Association (NZHPA) Mental Health Special Interest Group (SIG) holds this educational seminar each year. It is not exclusive for those who work in mental health - everyone is invited. 

Programme topics so far include:

  • Porirua consultant forensic psychiatrist Susanna Every-Palmer on the effects of clozapine on the gut transit time compared with that of other antipsychotics.
  • Amanda Wheeler from Griffith University, Queensland on exploring the role of the community pharmacy in supporting mental health consumers and carers.
  • A psychiatric registrar from the consultation-liaison team explaining their role
  • The mental health clinical leader for Compass Health on new initiatives in mental health by the PHO, including the role of a mental health nurse practitioner. 
  • A quetiapine audit in rest homes. 
  • Case studies.

PSA16 - the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia's annual conference

With a theme Leading Pharmacy Innovation, the comprehensive and engaging conference will be held at the Four Points by Sheraton Darling Harbour hotel in Sydney with new state-of-the-art facilities.

The PSA's premier professional development event will focus on how pharmacists can develop their role as healthcare professionals.

Pharmacy Business Network

The Pharmacy Guild is running its second annual Pharmacy Business Network event - a one-day business management conference for pharmacy owners and managers. The keynote speaker is Justine Troy from 42 Below Vodka, and there will also be a range of sessions on managing your business or managing people.

The event ties in with the Pharmacy Today/Guild Pharmacy Awards 2016 held later the same day.

Early bird tickets are $249 plus GST for Guild members, pharmacy students and sector representatives, and $449 plus GST for non-members.

Palliative care resource

These columns have been compiled by the Palliative Care Medications Working Group, which consists of palliative care professionals, including hospital specialists, GPs, hospice physicians, nurse practitioners and pharmacists.
