New appointments to the Pharmacy Council

The Pharmacy Council Tuesday 13 November 2012, 4:55PM

Dr Andrew Bary, Chairperson, would like to congratulate Dr Jeff Harrison, Ms Marie Bennett and Mrs Viv Gurrey on their recent ministerial appointment to the Board of the Pharmacy Council of New Zealand. Dr Harrison, Ms Bennett and Mrs Gurrey commence a three year term effective from 8th November 2012.

Dr Harrison is a Senior Lecturer in Clinical Pharmacy at the School of Pharmacy at the University of Auckland teaching in both undergraduate and post grad programmes as well as supervising PhD research. His research interests are in clinical and pharmacoepidemiology with a focus on improving the safe, effective and cost-effective use of medicines - particularly in relation to cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Dr Harrison also has extensive experience as a hospital pharmacist prior to taking up his role in academia.

Ms Marie Bennett is a community pharmacist owner of a busy West Auckland pharmacy.  She has current advisory group roles with Waitemata DHB and is a Pharmacy Guild North councillor. Her special interest is in working with new pharmacy based, patient centred models of care.

Mrs Viv Gurrey is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the largest parenting network and provider of support services for parents in New Zealand.  She has extensive national and international experience in strategic business consulting, is a member of the Institute of Directors, holds positions in the non government (NGO) sector specifically relating to parenting, the community and families and sits on several Boards.

"All three new Councillors bring quite different strengths and experience to the Board table.  Dr Harrison brings an academic perspective, Ms Bennett - a wealth of knowledge in various aspects of community pharmacy and Mrs Gurrey, as a layperson appointment, brings international business acumen.  The Board certainly looks forward to working with all three new Councillors ", said Dr Bary.

Along with these appointments, Hon Tony Ryall, Minister of Health, has reappointed Dr Andrew Bary and Mr Mark Bedford to the Council.  Dr Bary will be serving his third term and Mr Bedford his second term to Council.

Dr Bary would also like to publically acknowledge the Board's appreciation for the significant work carried out by the three outgoing Council members - Professor John Shaw, Ms Jo Mickleson and Mrs Robyn Nicoll. "While John, Jo and Robyn are going on to new challenges, their work and dedication to the Pharmacy Council of New Zealand will be missed", said Dr Bary.
